While the brunt of the economic recession took place between 2008 and 2009, economies around the world are hitting a critical and pivotal moment in which economic data starts to fare better and economies seem to be on the recovery. Still, there are some alarming statistics that show just how palpable the recession still is today. For example, the whole issue over Greece and Portugal's deficit is causing economic uncertainty in Europe. In a matter much closer to home, Alberta recently logged the highest number of lost jobs in a Canadian province. Grim news, no doubt, but read on to learn about the silver lining on this grey cloud.

An overview of job loss numbers in Alberta

Over the past decade, Alberta has made a name for itself as a great place to live and work. Job opportunities abounded, residential developments flourished, and immigrant numbers were on the rise. In February, however, Alberta was named as the province with the largest number of lost jobs. The figure sat at 14,800 lost jobs, resulting in a 0.3% unemployment rate increase over data from the previous month. The industries affected most were agriculture, wholesale, retail trade, and educational services. Just about 14,300 of the jobs that were lost were full-time positions.

The good news

Despite this unsettling news about job loss in Alberta, there is a good side to all of this. The good side is that Alberta still has a healthy economy. According to Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk, the numbers were altered a lot by the influx of unemployed Canadians and new-comer immigrants who moved to Alberta in recent months, looking to find opportunity. Alberta is still a great "land of opportunity", so you shouldn't let this news of job loss affect you. Just as a safety precaution, you should strive to keep your job, and if you are currently unemployed, continue to look for different options that may lead you to career stability.
