An interpreter's job is to facilitate oral and sign-language communication, between two or more users of different languages. As a professional in practice, an interpreter undergoes the act of facilitating communication from one language form to the equivalent or just the approximate equivalent of another language. The end-product will be the interpretation of another language, be it in speech, sign language, or written form.

An interpreter functions as someone who converts a thought or expression from one language to another with a comprehensible meaning and grammar. Some of the functions of an interpreter can differ depending on what is needed from him or her.

 

The job of an interpreter

The first and foremost function is to convert one language into another form of language. There are different modes of interpreting. It can be simultaneous interpreting, consecutive interpreting, whispered interpreting, relay interpreting, and liaison interpreting. Other types of interpreting include conference interpreting, legal and court interpreting, marketing interpreting, escort interpreting, public sector interpreting, medical interpreting, sign language interpreting, and media interpreting. It's a broad profession, but it's a very helpful one.

Skills that you need

There's only a number of skills that you need, and the most important of them is your knowledge about the specific language you interpret - which most likely in Edmonton will be French or English. However, many other languages may apply, as will interpersonal skills.

Aside from these tasks that you need to perform, you will need to practice the languages you interpret in order for you to maintain your skills' sharpness.
