Minimum wage jobs are categorized as those that offer the lowest government-allowed wage to employees. The minimum wage can be based on an hourly, daily, or monthly rate. In the US and Canada, the minimum wage is set on an hourly basis. Most minimum wage jobs are in the entry level. This covers trainees or students working part-time in fast food chains or those manning the cash register. It is commonly perceived that minimum wage jobs are those that require minimal training and qualifications. With an educational degree, for instance, you are slated for better-paying positions in your field compared to inexperienced workers.

Are there exemptions to the minimum wage law?
Some Canadian workers are not covered by the minimum wage set by their provinces. These include the self-employed, student-trainees, independent contractors, and sales personnel who earn by commission. Servers who accept tips may be paid less than the minimum wage in some provinces. The rules vary from each province. In Ontario, for instance, young workers may receive less compared to adult workers. Domestic workers are also exempted from minimum wage laws in New Brunswick.
Though minimum wage jobs are offered to less experienced workers, they can be a stepping stone to a more rewarding career. They can add to your experience and skills training.
